Joe’s Goals
By Martin Spriggs:Bio on January 3, 2009
The world makes a big deal about new year’s resolutions and goal setting…and I have to admit I’ve jumped on (and off) the wagon a few times over the years. Goals are good, but they usually end in disappointment, or you simply forget what you resolved to do or not do over the course of the year. As Christians I think we can all agree on worthy goals we could set that would be worth keeping and tracking. Praying more, studying God’s Word more, become more involved with worthwhile programs at church, etc.
One approach I’m trying this year is a technological way of tracking my progress against some of those goals. Since I’m on my computer almost everyday for some purpose, this is a natural for me. Sallie Draper, my WELSTech Podcast partner introduced me to Joe’s Goals — a simple little web application that allows you to enter your goals and then simply put a check mark each day next to those that you keep. You can even make entries that are “negative” like “broke the 8th commandment.” Then over time you can track your results by assigning different weight to each category. Kinda fun. Obviously you can put the traditional stuff on there too like read a book, exercise, drink water or lose weight, etc. You can even share your progress with others to keep yourself honest.
Effective? I’ll keep you posted. But it sure doesn’t hurt to intentionalize your goals and then develop a fun way to track them.

New Year’s Resolutions
By Dave Liggett:Bio on December 31, 2008
One of my favorite Bible passages that deals with making plans for the future is “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:15) As we make our New Year’s resolutions, let us do so with the attitude that they may reach fruition, or they may have much different results than we expected, or they may take us a direction in life we never intended when we made them. May our resolutions reveal a person whose main focus in life is the Lord and his guiding hand.

Prime Time for Giving Dwindling
By Dave Liggett:Bio on December 15, 2008
As another year draws to a close, we have many different reasons to give a portion of our worldly wealth to one another and to charities. Our government provides us one in a tax reduction for our giving. Our Lord provides us all kind of reasons to give in Scripture. Paul is the one who spends the most time sharing God’s will concerning our giving. 2 Corinthians 9:7 is a classic: “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” May all of us be “cheerful givers” to the one who gave us the greatest gift of all, namely heaven.
